Bedford Modern School, Refectory and Sixth Form Centre

With the increase in pupil numbers and the introduction of girls into the 6th form at Bedford Modern School, BE1 were commissioned to the design the expansion of the school, providing new and independent facilities on the school grounds.

Located at the highest point on the school grounds, the building offers spectacular views over the Ouse Valley. The building comprises two wings in an ‘L’ shape, each with two storeys with a central area in a radial form which accommodates the dining area which is fully glazed to maximise the views. The first provides a terrace off the 6th form common room.

The building serves two separate functions, in the first instance it provide a refectory for the whole school at ground floor and secondly a 6th for centre on the first floor. This includes a common room study and separate teaching areas. The two main aims of the design was to maximise the views from the communal areas and to create light and bright spaces in contrast to the more intimate study areas.

Aubrey Park Hotel

Aubrey Park Hotel, Redbourn

BE1 Architects were appointed to design and oversee the construction of a £1.8 million extension to Aubrey Park Hotel in Redbourn. The scheme consists of a new main function room, a pre-function space and new additional catering facilities to support the new accommodation. These new facilities allows the hotel to expand upon their already very popular venue for weddings, business breakfasts and seminars. The development was completed in September 2016

Paragraph 55 House, Bedfordshire

Set in the beautiful Bedfordshire countryside, this site provides the perfect scene for the realisation of a Paragraph 55 House. Making use of the existing contours, the house is dug in to a sloping grassed field and rises out of the ground to ultimately cantilever out over a pool.

Meeting the Paragraph 55 ambitions, the proposed design solution will instil a strong sense of place and integrate technologies which are specific to the client and the site

The site offers an opportunity to create a building that will be sensitive to the defining characteristics of the local area, whilst setting new standards for sustainability, low energy consumption, using local materials and supported by smart technology.

Norse Road Pavilion

Be1 were commissioned to prepare a scheme for 34 houses for a planning application as part of a larger development area on the outskirts of Bedford for Orbit Homes. As part of the application, an existing sports field has been relocated and Be1 design a bespoke sports pavilion for children’s sports practice and matches.

Northamptonshire School

Northamptonshire School

BE1 are appointed to carry out extension and refurbishment works to a traditional village school in the Northamptonshire countryside providing additional facilities for increasing pupil intake.

The completed scheme will provide a central teaching hub housing the library and IT suite, a new classroom and a multipurpose school/community hall.

A new and enhanced school entrance will transform the primary elevation fronting the main road, with the use traditional materials and detailing retaining the traditional village aesthetic.

Brief:

Outline planning application (including a feasibility layout) – permission granted in May 2017. Subsequently BE1 proceeded to a reserved matters application, through to construction

The site lies to the north of the rail track and along a SINC – Site of Importance for Nature Conservation identified by the London Wildlife Trust to cover a wide buffer of wildlife habitat. The proposed scheme utilises the SINC as a visual amenity asset to the new dwellings. The green space of Old Farm Park to the west of the proposed residential scheme was incorporated into the design proposal as an additional amenity landscaped public open space.

The residential scheme, together with the landscaped park to the west, provide a permeable environment with improved pedestrians links.

Brief:

Outline planning application with all matters reserved except access – permission granted May 2015; BE1 Architects were also commissioned to produce a comprehensive Design Code.

Residential development at Newlands Road, Luton

Flanked by the M1 to the West and a local service road to the East, the development on this site has been designed to accommodate more than 400 one and two bed residential units for the Built to Rent market. Linear buildings flank the M1 to create sheltered court yards with views out in to the open countryside. The route of an underground gas main has been designed as the main access route across the site with surface parking. A large basement car park releases a large part of the site as a landscaped amenity area. The residential buildings have been designed to allow for modular construction, resulting in permeable buildings that can respond to the different conditions around the site.
